Kaleidoscope at the Sidney Albert Albany JCC is an exciting enrichment program for elementary school-aged children, designed to meet the needs of each child. We primarily serve the Albany school district (Transportation from Albany schools is provided by the Albany School District Transportation Department); however, children from schools outside the district are welcome, but you must provide transportation.
Kaleidoscope is divided by grade for homeroom (2:35 pm - 4:00 pm; when child's bus arrives). There children enjoy snacks and games with their friends. In advance, children and parents choose specialty classes, which run Monday-Friday on our monthly calendar. Classes are offered to meet the diverse needs and interests of our children and may include sports classes, art classes, free swim, cooking, music, community service, language, etc. Children are always given the option to choose the Free Play or the Homework Room. Free swim is available each Thursday from 4:30-5pm. For most of the specialty classes, they are divided into 2 groups: K - 2nd graders and 3rd - 6th graders. Each group has caring counselors, trained to supervise and interact with school-age children and follow a 1:10 staff to child ratio or better during the program.
2:35 p.m.: Children start to arrive from elementary schools and enjoy snacks and free play.
3:00 p.m.: Children attend first specialty class.
4:00 p.m.: Children attend second specialty class.
5:00 p.m.: Children meet again in their homerooms for free play until pick up by 6pm.
On Fridays, we focus on a variety of Jewish themes. Typically, an upcoming Jewish Holiday or other community centered topics such as Mitzvot (good deeds). A variety of activities make Fridays fun, as well as educational. The programs are designed so that all children, regardless of religious background, can participate, enjoy and feel comfortable.
Kaleidoscope provides additional care for children on Albany School District half-days. These days are included in your fee, as long as your child is regularly scheduled to attend Kaleidoscope on that day of the week.
The JCC also offers Vacation Camp programs. These are available for an additional charge, and you must pre-register your child for each day that you would like him/her to attend.
If you would like more information about our program, or would like a tour, please call Andrew Katz, Youth Director, at 518-438-6651 ext. 113. You can also email him at firstname.lastname@example.org. We look forward to welcoming your child to our wonderful program.
