What is Kaleidoscope?

Kaleidoscope at the Sidney Albert Albany JCC is an exciting enrichment program for elementary school-aged children, designed to meet the needs of each child. We primarily serve the Albany school district (Transportation from Albany schools is provided by the Albany School District Transportation Department); however, children from schools outside the district are welcome, but you must provide transportation.

Kaleidoscope is divided by two grade groups (K-1st, 2nd-6th) for homeroom (2:30 pm - 4:00 pm; when child's bus arrives). There children enjoy snacks and games with their friends. Each day there are two fun specialty options the children can choose to participate at the JCC. Activities are offered to meet the diverse needs and interests of our children and may include sports classes, art classes, free swim, cooking, music, community service, language, etc. Children are always given the option to choose the Free Play or the Homework Room. Free swim is available each Thursday from 4:30-5pm. For most of the specialty options, they are divided into 2 groups: K - 1st graders and 2nd - 6th graders. Each group has caring counselors, trained to supervise and interact with school-age children and follow a 1:10 staff to child ratio or better during the program.

Daily Schedule for Kaleidoscope

2:30 p.m.: Children start to arrive from elementary schools and enjoy snacks and free play.
3:00 p.m.: Children attend first specialty option.
4:00 p.m.: Children attend second specialty option.
5:00 p.m.: Children meet again in their homerooms for free play until pick up by 6pm.

Friday Programming

On Fridays, we focus on a variety of Jewish themes. Typically, an upcoming Jewish Holiday or other community centered topics such as Mitzvot (good deeds). A variety of activities make Fridays fun, as well as educational. The programs are designed so that all children, regardless of religious background, can participate, enjoy and feel comfortable.

Half-Days @ End of School Year

Kaleidoscope provides additional care for children on Albany School District half-days. These days are included in your fee, as long as your child is regularly scheduled to attend Kaleidoscope on that day of the week.

School Vacations

The JCC also offers Vacation Camp programs. These are available for an additional charge, and you must pre-register your child for each day that you would like him/her to attend.
